ALAMOGORDO, N.M. - Maintaining a close band with the local community has always been a priority at Holloman Air Force Base. In an attempt to further cultivate those bonds, Holloman has created an opportunity for members of the Tularosa Basin to share its facilities.

Friends of Holloman is a program designed to build the already existing bond between Team Holloman and the local Tularosa Basin. The program offers the community an opportunity to come and experience a few of Holloman's facilities. Friends of Holloman is unique to Holloman, being one of the only bases in the Air Force providing these privileges to non-military affiliates.

"Military bases are such a mystery to the outside communities, if we give them an opportunity to experience our way of living I feel it will help with strengthening our bonds," said Lisa Bradford, 49th Force Support Squadron marketing director.

Friends of Holloman is a free membership, which allows members to visit the base during the operating hours of participating facilities. Once you receive the membership it will be valid for the remainder of the year.

"The Friends of Holloman is a positive program for a few reasons," said Col. Sandelier, 49th Force Support Squadron commander. "First, it allows the local community to see what types of programs we offer to our Airmen for their well-being and recreation, as well as share those activities. Alamogordo is a small community, and if the Air Force has invested in big things like a bowling center or golf course, we are happy to share those capabilities with the public."

Members can enjoy some of Holloman's best facilities including the bowling center, Club Holloman, Apache Mesa Golf Course, Oasis Pizza and Sports Bar and The Heritage Park Museum.

"We run Karaoke nights, comedy club nights, sporting event viewings like the Super Bowl and UFC fights and of course, have great food and beverage services at each of these locations. We're working diligently to increase awareness of the events that Friends of Holloman are welcome to join in," said Sandelier.

To apply for a membership the member will be subjected to a background check to be cleared for base access. All members must be 15 years of age to apply or accompanied by an adult 18 years and older, the process can take 15 minutes to a few days for processing.

"When co-mingling recreational activities and having our Airmen and Friends of Holloman join together to have fun together, it creates a stronger sense of community. Our Airmen shouldn't be isolated from Alamogordo and vice versa, the local population shouldn't be isolated from our Airmen," said Sandelier.
