HINESVILLE, Ga. – Soldiers of 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, or the Vanguard Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, marched in the annual Liberty County Martin Luther King Day Parade, Jan. 19, in Hinesville, Georgia, to celebrate the life and works of the civil rights leader.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is celebrated on the third Monday of January, which closely coincides with his birthday, Jan. 15.

“It’s important because he did a lot for every community across the United States and I just think he’s a great man,” said Sgt. 1st Class Thurman Barrow, the sexual assault response coordinator for 6th Squadron, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 4th IBCT.

A color guard of five soldiers from the Marne Division and 54 soldiers from the 4IBCT headquarters’ company participated in the parade as well as marching bands, fire trucks, many civil servants, a biker group and even horses.

Barrow, a Bronx, New York, native, who attended with his family, added his kids enjoy seeing the floats and the horses and he thought the changes King fought for are important to celebrate.

“Once change started across the United States, it also started changing in the military so I celebrate that every day,” said Barrow.

“[Martin Luther King Jr.] fought for equality for all races,” said Pfc. Timothy Medlock, a geospatial engineer with 4th IBCT, who noted that the military formation he marched in was made up of many ethnicities and cultural backgrounds. “It kind of shows how far we’ve come.”

Many spectators from the community attended to show their support and cheered as the participants passed by.

In a separate community event, 54 soldiers from Company C, 3rd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 4th IBCT, also represented 3rd ID as they marched in Glennville, Georgia, MLK parade Jan. 17.
