JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. - Before autumn of last year, families making reservations at Joint Base Lewis-McChord’s Fisher House faced a slow and tedious process. They had to download forms, scan and email them, often while traveling to Washington.

Families often had to wait several days for the submitted paperwork to get approved, adding undue stress during a difficult time.

Then, last September, a new system debuted which dramatically changed the process.

As part of a school project, students from the University of Washington-Tacoma Institute of Technology developed and implemented an automated system in which all paperwork is filled and submitted online.

“We looked at their website, updated and automated it to be user-friendly,” said Brandon G. Hiatt, a student at the UW-Tacoma. “DOD members, veterans and military families can now request a room online or via their mobile phones, itself instead of doing the paperwork trail.”

“They can actually focus on their loved ones that are going through recovery, surgery or dealing with their medical issues. That needs to be where their focus is,” he added.

According to the Fisher House-JBLM website, their mission is to provide service members and their families a comfortable, nurturing and secure environment while they receive medical care at Madigan Army Medical Center.

Lt. Gen. Stephen R. Lanza, commanding general, I Corps, recognized the students’ efforts and presented them with certificates Jan. 14 at UW-Tacoma for their hard work and support.

“I cannot be more thankful or proud of their accomplishments,” Lanza said. “Not just from a technical solution, but all they’ve done to help Soldiers and families and how this project will endure.”

“This project is so much bigger, and is indicative of the relationship we have with the university, this community and our military itself,” he added.

This project gave the students the opportunity to help the community, which is what Andrew Fry, an assistant director at UW-Tacoma, said he expects from them.

“The number one requirement from my students is that they use technology to help the community,” said Fry.

Liza M. Hoffman, Ph.D. at UW-Tacoma, added, “The students have made a difference and did something meaningful. We are very proud of what they have done for this community.”
