FORT LEE, Va. - The Fort Lee garrison has a new enlisted leader.

Command Sgt. Maj. Clarence D. Richardson received the top enlisted spot from Command Sgt. Maj. Sheila R. Nelson during a change of responsibility ceremony Friday at the Regimental Club.

Col. Paul K. Brooks, Fort Lee garrison commander, hosted the ceremony attended by several honored guests, numerous command sergeants major (both active and retired), fellow noncommissioned officers, family, friends and associates of both Nelson and Richardson.

Brooks thanked Nelson for her service and said it was an honor and pleasure serving with her over the last 17 months. What stands out most about Nelson, he added, is her concern for others, and her willingness to help anyone, anyway she can.

“She is completely dedicated to her fellow Soldiers, civilians, families, the Army and the country,” Brooks said. “CSM Nelson exemplifies what an NCO should be. She is a leader, a developer, a trainer and a role model who leaves behind a tremendous legacy of modeling a standard for all of us to strive and meet.

“Her counsel and mentoring were priceless,” Brooks also noted. “It is something I will always be extremely grateful for.”

After bidding farewell to Nelson, Brooks welcomed his new command sergeant major, saying Richardson has “already been digging into everything,” trying to figure out how to make an impact as a member of Team Lee. He also acknowledged the “impeccable credentials and outstanding career” of the 26-year Army veteran who rose through the ranks as a petroleum supply specialist and logistics noncommissioned officer.

Richardson’s career accomplishments include numerous leadership positions in highly deployed units like the 101st Aviation Regiment, Fort Campbell, Kentucky, the 4th Aviation Regiment at Fort Carson, Colorado, and the 3rd Sustainment Brigade at Fort Stewart, Georgia. He previously served at Fort Lee as well, with assignments ranging from Army Logistics University instructor and senior small group leader at the Logistics NCO Academy to first sergeant for Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 240th Quartermaster Battalion, 49th QM Group and command sergeant major of the 244th QM Bn., 23rd QM Brigade. The CSM’s full bio is available at www.lee.army.mil/about/garrison.command.group.aspx.

Nelson’s 30-year military career has been equally successful. She has served as the garrison CSM since June 2012. She plans on retiring but has not yet set a date.

During her farewell remarks, Nelson described her final assignment as “exciting and rewarding,” and said the job was never boring. She also thanked several people in the garrison by name for their support and gave them credit for her success. “You made my time with Team Lee quite enjoyable,” she said.

Nelson also thanked her mother, who she called “her greatest inspiration,” and thanked her children for their unconditional support, love and understanding.

Richardson said in his remarks the ceremony was like a homecoming for him, and he appreciated seeing a lot of his former commanders, mentors and peers in the audience.

He thanked his wife Debora and son CJ for being there and for their support. He also thanked the garrison team for a smooth transition and a warm welcome.
