GERMERSHEIM, Germany - The Pentagon has announced that as a result of a review of U.S. military presence in Europe, a distribution center of excellence will be created at Germersheim Army Depot, home to Defense Logistics Agency Distribution Europe.

The decision, part of the European Infrastructure Consolidation process, also mandates that regular mail sorting/distribution functions relocate from the German Aerial Mail Terminal in Frankfurt to Germersheim Army Depot.

“For over a decade, DLA Distribution Europe has been committed to supporting America’s military and Combatant Commands, both in Europe and throughout the globe. We are excited to expand that support and further our legacy of seamless joint theater distribution and innovative support of DLA and service-managed materiel to provide best-value support to our customers,” said DLA Distribution chief integration officer Perry Knight.

Other decisions announced as a result of the review include the return of 15 military sites to their host nations. According to the Pentagon, these actions, which will see a slight decrease in U.S. force levels but ensure troops are most effectively positioned to enable the U.S. and NATO allies, will save the U.S. government approximately $500 million annually.
