Story by Chief Petty Officer Ahron Arendes

    Commander, Submarine Group Nine

BANGOR, Wash. - Four Sailors from Pacific Northwest submarine force sea and shore commands were recognized as the 2014 Submarine Group 9 Sailors and Junior Sailors of the Year Jan. 8 during a luncheon at Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor.

Machinist’s Mate 1st Class (SS) Christopher Smith, assigned to USS Ohio (SSGN 726) Blue, was selected as the Sea Sailor of the Year (SOY) and Navy Counselor 1st Class (SCW/FMF) Sara Dozier, assigned to the Commander, Submarine Group 9 staff, was selected as the Shore SOY.

Yeoman 2nd Class (SS) Cody Browder, assigned to USS Pennsylvania (SSBN 735) Gold, was selected as the Sea Junior Sailor of the Year (JSOY) and Logistics Specialist 2nd Class (SS) Michael Porterfield, assigned to Priority Material Office, Bremerton, was selected as the Shore JSOY.

This is Dozier’s second year consecutive year being named the Submarine Group 9 shore SOY.

“I have to say, I’m surprised to say the least,” said Dozier. “The competition is very fierce and there are a lot of hard-charging first classes, but it is humbling to be in this position again. I’m going to put in 110 percent to try to go further [in the competition] to show my junior Sailors to don’t stop, don’t stop improving.”

For Smith, being named sea SOY was a result of hard work and teamwork.

“No one person can do their job on their own,” said Smith. “It’s always a team effort. You just have to keep pushing. You get paid to do a certain job. You don’t quit. There’s no 9 to 5. You do what you can to help out your team and your team will help you.”

For Browder, being named the JSOY is something he never thought possible when he first checked into Pennsylvania.

“It is a great honor to be chosen,” said Browder. “I just hit the deck plate running as soon as I got to the boat. I volunteered to be a [command fitness leader], qualified chief of the watch and just worked hard. This is something I never imagined happening. I checked in two years ago, bright eyed and bushy tailed and now I’m here. It’s just an honor.”

According to Porterfield, he was selected because of his leadership and pride in his work.

“A lot of it is being able to mold junior Sailors and put them in a position to succeed,” Porterfield said. “What I’ve learned from my seniors who put me in a position to succeed, is to do the same thing for my junior Sailors.”

Smith and Dozier will represent CSG-9 in the Commander, Submarine Forces Pacific Sailor of the Year competition, scheduled for February in San Diego.

"These Sailors are representative of the tremendous talent and ability of the thousands of Sailors here in the Pacific Northwest and throughout the Navy that are getting the job done every day for our country," said Commander of Submarine Group 9 Rear Adm. David Kriete. They are the leaders of tomorrow’s Navy, but they are already leading and setting themselves apart in remarkable ways today. They are the ones ensuring the Navy has presence with a purpose, ensuring that our Navy is in fact where it matters, when it matters, all in the midst of a very uncertain and often dangerous world.”

Other SOY finalists were Sonar Technician (Surface) (SW) Scott Burdick, assigned to Naval Ocean Processing Facility, Whidbey Island, Electrician’s Mate 1st Class (SS) James Geronimo, assigned to USS Alabama (SSBN 731) Gold, Electronics Technician 1st Class (SS) Brian Condon, assigned to Commander, Submarine Development Squadron (COMSUBDEVRON) 5 staff, Machinist’s Mate 1st Class (SS) Joel Davies, assigned to Naval Submarine Support Center, Bangor, Sonar Technician (Submarines) 1st Class (SS/DV) Jason Webb, assigned to COMSUBDEVRON 5 Det. Undersea Research and Development, and Logistics Specialist 1st Class (SW/AW) Jerrett Glasper, assigned to Priority Material Office, Bangor.

Other JSOY finalists were Sonar Technician (Surface) 2nd Class (SW) Mark Bailey, assigned to Naval Ocean Processing Facility, Whidbey Island, Machinist’s Mate 2nd Class (SS) Wyatt Withers, assigned to USS Connecticut (SSN 22), Machinist’s Mate 2nd Class (SS) James Dunn, assigned to USS Ohio (SSGN 726) Blue, Yeoman 2nd Class (SS) Dominique Roseboro, assigned to Commander, Submarine Group 9 staff, Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class (SG/FMF) Christopher Towle of COMSUBDEVRON 5 staff, and Yeoman 2nd Class (SS) Jesse Eagerton, assigned to Commander, Submarine Squadron 17.

The SOY program, sponsored by the chief of naval operations, was initiated in 1972 by former Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Elmo Zumwalt and former Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy John "Jack" Whittet to recognize outstanding Atlantic and Pacific Fleet Sailors. The Shore Sailor of the Year program was introduced in 1973.
