FORT KNOX, Ky. - On a blustery January day at Fort Knox’s Waybur Theater, Maj. Gen. Scottie D. Carpenter assumed responsibility of the 84th Training Command from Maj. Gen. David W. Puster in a ceremony officiated by Maj. Gen. Peter S. Lennon, deputy commanding general (Support) of U.S. Army Reserve Command, Jan. 4, 2015.

Puster took command of the 84th in 2012 after commanding the 302nd Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, 412th Theater Engineer Command located at Westover Air Force Base in Chicopee, Mass. Under Puster’s leadership, three training divisions, three brigades and 13 battalions located in three training locations were responsible for training thousands of service members from the Army Reserve, National Guard, Active Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps in more than 10 collective training exercises.

In reflecting on Puster’s leadership, Lennon said his positive attitude, leadership and ability to collaborate with other organizations strengthened the 84th Training Command.

"Your leadership makes me think of four words: roster, rigor, realism, and results,” said Lennon. “The way you have brought this unit and all participating units to a higher level reflects greatly on your abilities.”

During the ceremony, Puster addressed the 84th for the last time as its commander.

“The opportunity and privilege to command the 84th has been the most rewarding job of my career,” said Puster. “We face our own challenges in the Army Reserve as we prepare the force that is so crucial to the security of our nation. It’s been an honor and privilege to share the last few years with the Soldiers for the 84th and the garrison at Fort Knox. It’s a time we will always cherish. I only wish the best for this command in the coming year and I wish the best for Maj. Gen. Carpenter as he embarks on his new mission.”

The 84th Training Command’s mission is an important one as it provides the “Gold Standard” in unit readiness training for combat support and combat service support units throughout the nation.

Carpenter, who has deployed overseas four times, traveled thousands of miles to join the command after serving as the commanding general, 311th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) located in Los Angeles. Carpenter also held positions as the commanding general for the 11th Military Police Brigade, Los Alamitos, Calif. and deputy brigade commander, Task Force Guardian, Bagram, Afghanistan, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Thanking his friends and family for their critical role in his success, Carpenter kept his speech short. “My vision is about teamwork and working together. If you take away one thing today, is that I’m about you. I know the talent and expertise that we have here. I look to you as a resource as I assume command here.”
