    Advantages to running on treadmills

    JACKSONVILLE, NC, UNITED STATES

    Story by Cpl. Mary Carmona

    Marine Corps Installations East

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. - Once upon a time, I preferred running on a treadmill to running outside. I liked that the treadmill tracked my speed and distance, and during the winter I could escape the cold.

Not to mention, I could watch random shows while every so often checking to see how many more calories I’d burned.

Then the fateful day that made me an outdoor runner occurred. I was running rather quickly on the treadmill, messing around with the incline settings, and I got all tripped up over myself and went flying off the back of the treadmill into a cement wall.

While I sustained no physical injury, my pride was dashed to bits. The incident took place in the middle of a gym full of iron-pumping addicts.

However, despite my own inglorious history with treadmills, I have to point out treadmills do offer benefits aside from calorie counting and distance tracking.

Rough terrain can cause pain or injury to runners.

Sometimes, depending on where you live, rocky or uneven ground is the only outside option. Treadmills offer runners an even surface – a vacation for your feet, if you will.

Another aspect of terrain control is training.

You might live in the flattest county ever, but plan on running a race that boasts epic hills. Just adjust the incline settings on your treadmill to accommodate for the hill-training part of your workouts.

As previously mentioned, it’s also a great alternative during inclement weather. Whether you’re trying to dodge suffocating heat or blinding snow, treadmills provide that nice “room-temperature” run.

Not everyone is a toned and technically sound runner. Some would prefer not to flaunt their deficiencies to every car they pass by, but this can’t be an excuse for never running at all.

If you’re a self-conscious runner and have the money to purchase a treadmill, the privacy of running on a treadmill in your own home provides you with a way to run without constantly stressing over your image.

The biggest theme of all the advantages associated with treadmill running is control. You control pace, incline, temperature and other variables affecting your run.

Even little details like where to keep your water bottle and wallet are easier.

I’m not advocating running on treadmills alone, because running outside is important too. But don’t forget treadmills are a reliable alternative. Just make sure you don’t go flying off the back of one.
