FORT HOOD, Texas - New Soldiers at Fort Hood got the ball rolling early as they pooled their money together to go shopping for next year’s holiday season, this past Saturday, Jan. 13.

“Santa's Workshop is exclusively funded by donations and is staffed entirely by volunteers who strive to present a professional and positive attitude while working year-round in order to distribute new toys, books, and games to children in the Fort Hood military community during Christmastime," as stated on swsforthood.com

“We all came up with a plan to organize something that we could help out during the holidays so we chose the Santa’s workshop,” said Chief Warrant Officer 2 Christina Winfield, who was the group’s subject matter expert when it came to buying girls’ toys.

“We have the ability to do it and we’re happy to do it,” said Chief Warrant Officer 2 Joseph Taflinger, a Petroleum Systems Technician. “It’s a way for us to reach out to every community we’re in by doing different types of charity work, just trying to get involved.”

Six warrant officers from the 310th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) spent over $700 in a little more than an hour buying all the toys, coloring books and crayons they could fit in three shopping carts. The crew took their time shopping at the Copperas Cove Wal-Mart, buying gifts that they hope the kids will enjoy.

“We try to reach out to the community as warrant officers, as a group, and we’re trying to help make sure the kids have a good Christmas and get at least a gift for Christmas,” added Taflinger.

For almost 20 years the 13th SC(E) has sponsored this program here at Fort Hood to help military families who find themselves in need during the holidays. Thanks to the donations like this throughout the year, it is expected that children supported can receive somewhere between $50 upward to $200 worth of presents.

“You never really know what someone is going through, you know if you can help someone else out that might be in a bad situation, then it’s the right thing to do,” concluded Winfield.
