CAMP CASEY, South Korea – The 2nd Infantry Division Band brought holiday cheer in the form of music to Soldiers at Hanson Gym, here Dec. 10.

The hour-long holiday show consisted of many different musical arrangements, featuring all the different groups within the Warrior Band. With performances from the woodwinds, brass combo, rock band, jazz combo and more, patrons were treated to an array of different sounds to help them get in a good mood this holiday season.

“This is the best part of my job, being able to play for the Soldiers,” said Staff Sgt. Ryan Dean Fussell, tuba player in the 2nd Infantry Division Band. “When we get to sit down and play for the Soldiers and see them enjoy it, it’s the highlight of my career.”

The show gave Soldiers, family members and department of the Army civilians an opportunity to have a little bit of home away from home.

“Being able to come out here and listen to the music means I am able to share a life experience with my family,” said Sgt. Gabriel Peterson, promotions noncommissioned officer in Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 210th Field Artillery Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division.

Peterson attended the concert with his wife, Sopheak Peterson, and his sons Kaleb, 5, and Sehla, 16 months. Kaleb danced to many of the tunes and the music gave the Petersons along with others in attendance an opportunity to reflect.

“It’s important to have events like this, so Soldiers can get a taste of what the band does,” said Spc. Jacob Hinze, mechanized infantryman in Company B, 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division. “It gives Soldiers away from home the chance to come down here and have some fun.”

Hinze said the concert put him in a better mood even with having to be away from his family during the holidays.

According to Sgt. 1st Class Shelby Barber, 2nd Infantry Division Band operations training noncommissioned officer in charge, raising moral and putting a smile on people’s faces is the reason they prepare for weeks to put on these types of productions. It took an entire day just to turn the gym into a concert venue.

The finished product featured a variety of tunes from classics ranging from the “The Little Drummer Boy” to an upbeat rendition of “All I Want for Christmas is You” performed by the rock band to a Salsa version of “Feliz Navidad” to jazz tunes from the Peanuts Christmas special.

“All the different groups performing adds a little bit of variety, so hopefully there is something for everybody,” said Barber.

The performances inspired dancing and people to clap in unison as they enjoyed their favorite holiday carols.

“It makes me feel the holiday spirit,” said Sopheak Peterson. “We’re happy to come out and support the band.”

The band members were just happy to have the chance to play and give the crowd some enjoyment.

“It’s our way to give back to the Soldiers who support us by coming out and share a bit of home and normalcy with them,” Barber said.
