SASEBO, Japan – The forward-deployed amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) underwent an inspection Dec. 8 for the 2015 Capt. Edward F. Ney Memorial Award. The inspection was performed by Cmdr. Danny W. King, a food service director assigned to Naval Supply Systems Command.

The Capt. Edward F. Ney Award for food service excellence is given annually to Navy galleys of each category of ship and shore command that earn a five-star rating in a one-day inspection. The objective is to improve the quality of life for Navy personnel and recognize the best general messes in the Navy.

“To prepare we just went back to basics,” said Master Chief Culinary Specialist Felipe Tubera. “Sanitation, safety, quality and service, those were the cornerstones of our preparation. We perfected those four basics and that’s how we ended up being finalists.”

Throughout the inspection, King evaluated Bonhomme Richard’s food division on a variety of topics including: cleanliness, food quality, organization, inventory, galley presentation and culinary specialist job proficiency. Culinary Specialist 1st Class Gerald Moody, S-2 division’s leading petty officer, was impressed by the performance of his Sailors.

“We simply executed the basics flawlessly,” said Moody. “By focusing on everyday tasks like maintaining sanitation, keeping our storerooms organized and having an accurate inventory, I believe we were able to leave a positive impression on Cmdr. King.”

The Sailors of the supply department received some assistance from around the ship and beyond to help ensure the inspection was a success.

“Our goal was to provide a “wow” factor in any given area the commander would step into in our spaces and that’s what we saw,” said Chief Warrant Officer Jonathan Delacruz. “I really appreciate all the support in preparing that we got from other departments on the ship, as well as support coming from the Sailors families and from Ernest J. King High School’s Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps.”

Award results are scheduled to release in March 2015.
