FORT MCCOY, Wis. - The 88th Regional Support Command provides class services and base operations support to more than 55,000 Soldiers, family members and DoD civilians across 19 States in the Northern U.S. from the Ohio River to the Pacific Coast.

Battlefield circulations are a key way for leaders to improve communication and enhance their situational awareness within a tactical environment. The same principle holds true for leadership of 88th Regional Support Command who aim to better understand and serve personnel throughout the northwest region.

Brig. Gen. R.A. Bassford, deputy commanding general of the 88th RSC, conducted such a visit when he toured multiple facilities dispersed across three states, Dec. 1-4.

The tour was comprised of visiting Area Maintenance Support Activity and Reserve Personnel Action Centers in Kansas, Missouri and Illinois, with Bassford, the 88th RSC deputy commanding general, meeting 88th RSC personnel to find out what needs and improvements can be made to enhance their workplaces.

Bassford said the trip was his initiative, with the logic being the 88th RSC has a lot of good people out in the field doing positive things that deserve to be recognized.

“It’s important to get out there and see what they’re doing, who they are, what their needs are and what we at the headquarters can do for them,” Bassford said. “We want to help them do their jobs even better.”

Bassford said he picked the three states to visit because of the high concentration of facilities the 88th RSC has in the area and was impressed by what he observed at locations in Topeka, Kansas and Belton, Missouri, for example.

“I was very impressed with the quality of the workforce … all of them are doing a good job and it just reinforces my belief that we at the 88th RSC are successful because of their work ethic and quality of people at the RPACs and facilities.”

Also impressive were the facilities and the level of maintenance, Bassford said, with many of them being new and state of the art.

“There are some which need work however which will be heartaches down the road, but overall they are much better than I thought,” he said.

Bassford visited other locations in New Century and Lawrence, Kansas, Weldon Springs and Independence, Missouri, and Granite City and Belleville, Illinois, inspecting the sites maintenance areas and meeting RPAC employees for feedback on their jobs and duties.

This feedback is crucial so he can act on concerns generated from the staff, Bassford said.

“It would be pointless if I came here and gathered all this information and did nothing with it because there are things that need to be looked at,” he continued, citing building repairs and internet connectivity issues as focal points.

Bassford said he looked forward to visiting other areas in the coming months and performing similar trips to reach out to as many in the 88th RSC’s 19-state region as possible.
