FORT CARSON, Colo. - “It is our way of giving back” was the answer every culinary specialist happily replied when asked why they volunteered to prepare 350 turkeys and all of the Thanksgiving side dishes to go with them.

About 30 culinary specialists started 24-hour operations Nov. 24 to cook and prepare 3,000 dinners for The Salvation Army Thanksgiving Day meal.

This is the 24th year Fort Carson has teamed up with The Salvation Army to provide Thanksgiving meals to community members who might otherwise go without.

“We are part of this community,” said Commanding General Maj. Gen. Paul J. LaCamera, 4th Infantry Division and Joint Task Force Carson. “That is why we are here.”

The volunteers prepared more than 2,500 pounds of turkey, 700 pounds of green beans and mashed potatoes and 150 pounds of stuffing.

“I am honored to help serve those (who) are less fortunate,” said Sgt. Tyrone Coe, culinary specialist, 2nd Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne). “I am humbled by the opportunity to be able to give back to the community. I would encourage others to do the same when afforded the chance.”

Sgt. Maj. Reginald Uzzell, chief of food operations management, 4th Infantry Division, said he is glad that Joint Task Force Carson is able to give back to the community.

“The Soldiers are here on their own time to cook and prepare all of the food for the meal,” Uzzell said. “It is 100 percent volunteer; they are cooking because they want to give back to the community and all it does for us.

“The Front Range community does a lot for us,” he said.

Another Soldier said he joined the Army to be able to give back to all of the brave men and women who have served this country before him.

“I love volunteering,” said Pvt. Chaz Derring, culinary specialist, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 4th Special Troops Battalion, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division. “I’m in a position to help out those in need; it is a very humbling experience.”

Fort Carson leaders helped serve the food at The Salvation Army Colorado Springs Corps Community Center on Thanksgiving Day.
