FORT HOOD, Texas — As the sun’s rays shone on the player’s faces and the leaves crinkled under their shoes, fans cheered their company on to victory.

Soldiers assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division celebrated the Thanksgiving Day holiday with a Turkey Bowl and Feast at Fort Hood, Texas, Nov 26.

The battalion’s companies were broken up into seven teams to include the 1st Cav. Div. Horse Cavalry Detachment, the 1st Cav. Div. Band and the “All Stars” played by the Division Command Group.

“Times like this are a great opportunity for us to get out and interact with our troops,” said Maj. Ed Williams, division deputy chemical officer assigned to the battalion’s Operations Company.

The teams brought Soldiers of all ranks together to accomplish a common goal — to win.

It was not uncommon to hear a junior enlisted Soldier yelling for an open play to a senior officer on the field. The cheering audience was sucked into the contagious spirit of camaraderie.

“It’s fun watching my kids cheer on their dad while he is out there,” said San Juana Morante, wife of Spc. Aaron Morante of Headquarters Support Company.

For some Soldiers, their physical strength and stamina was put to the test when they had to play back-to-back games after proving themselves victorious in the preliminary rounds. Each game lasted 40 minutes.

“Physical fitness played a role in my endurance during each game,” said Spc. Amalia Rivers, driver for HHBn’s command sergeant major.

Rivers said she is thankful for such an event that brought so many people together during the holiday.

As the game drew to an end two teams were left to fight for the title Turkey Bowl Champion 2014 — the battalion’s Intelligence and Support Company and Horse Detachment.

In the final game, I noticed a little more anxiety, teamwork, and how certain individuals stepped in certain roles I was surprised by,” said Lt. Col. Jesse Phillips, commander of Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion.

An hour and half after the field’s closing time, the winners and spectators walked off the field, members of both teams wiping their brows of sweat and patting each other on the back.

Smiles spread across the faces of all the players, while Soldiers and children reenacted “power plays,” making it difficult to differentiate the losing team from the winning team.

“The main intent for this event was to boost morale, camaraderie, and esprit de corps for families and Soldiers to feel part of a team and the unit,” said Phillips.

To end the day, Soldiers gathered one more time…this time a battle to see who could get to the food first.

“If it is important to you, you will find a way to overcome any obstacles and hindrances to find a way to victory … we conquered the task,” said Sgt. 1st Class Latisha Brossard, G1 assigned to the battalion’s I & S Company.
