USACE Galveston District spotlight on Diane Kovacevich

GALVESTON, Texas – For the last five months, Diane Kovacevich has filled the role of a management analysis officer, processing personnel actions for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District Resource Management Office, maintaining integrated manning documents and submitting reports – all new tasks that she readily accepted in her 40th year of service to help fill a gap in her office, proving that it’s never too late to learn something new regardless which stage people are at in their careers.

Over the last four decades, Kovacevich worked as a vehicle manager/maintenance officer, budget analyst and financial management analyst, always volunteering for increased responsibilities.

“I enjoy working with staff,” said Kovacevich. “Meeting people from their first day at work and watching them grow in their roles is rewarding.”

While she may not have selected every position she worked in for the district, she routinely made the transition seamless for those she worked with.

“My most recent position was more about timing than anything else,” said Kovacevich. “In May, my co-worker went on maternity leave and we didn’t have a manpower officer, so I volunteered. It’s a good job, but I will soon be transferring back to being a financial management analyst for the next couple of months.”

The district’s Resource Management Office is responsible for implementing policies and processes required to manage the district’s financial and staffing resources and provides the manpower management support and services necessary to execute the district’s annual $180 million program.

Shortly after Kovacevich returns to her position, she will retire in January 2015, taking with her a lifetime of institutional knowledge and leaving the district with a large pair of shoes that won’t easily be filled.

A native of Galveston, she earned her associate’s degree in from Galveston College in 1971. Upon retirement, she intends to spend more time with her family and knows that a four-legged member, named Emma-K, is eagerly anticipating her transition.
