CAMP HUMPHREYS, South Korea - If you are a Soldier who is up to date on their training, then you are familiar with the Army's Sexual Harassment Assault Response and Prevention Program. You might also be aware of the long power point presentations that are common with SHARP training.
Soldiers at the 194th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, the “Providers," 501st Sustainment Brigade, are receiving a different type of training under the direction of Sgt. 1st. Class Richard Craft, Battalion sexual assault response coordinator, 194th CSSB, originally from Rutherfordton, N.C.
On Nov. 25, five companies under the 194th CSSB came together from every corner of the peninsula to fill a gymnasium at Camp Humphreys, South Korea. They were about to be part of a different type of SHARP training dubbed Sharp Clue and the Amazing Race.
Phase I of the competition, Sharp Clue, was a mirror of the board game Clue. Different stations within the gymnasium were set-up to mimic a motorpool, dining facility, barracks room, an on-post night club and off post night club. Soldiers were asked questions based on different scenarios and given a clue if they answered correctly. Companies then used those clues to try and figure out who committed the offense.
"Soldier's were ask a series of questions in order to find out who committed an offense and the type of offense, sexual harassment, sexual assault and which room the offense was committed." said Lt. Col. Juanita Clarke, 194th CSSB commander. "With this training we wanted to show Soldiers that sexual assault and sexual harassment can happen any place."
During the event, battalion and company leadership were present and actively engaged in the training.
Phase II, held in the afternoon was called the Amazing Race. Soldiers were asked a series of questions related to SHARP and points were awarded to the companies for every question answered correctly.
"The event was a great experience for the Soldiers. Something different from the normal powerpoint presentations. The training boosted Soldier morale by keeping them engaged throughout the training and aided in furthering their knowledge of the SHARP program," said Craft, of the quarterly training event.
The company that demonstrated the most knowledge and scored the most points were awarded a SHARP streamer by the battalion commander and command sergeant major.
In the end the 61st Maintenance Company, 194th CSSB, 501st SBDE were the ones to receive the battalion SHARP streamer for the quarter.
Command Sgt. Maj. Byron Davis, command sergeant major, 194th CSSB said, "Soldier's talk about these training events with each other and that tells us we're getting through to them. The Soldier's are taking it in as we have noticed a significant decrease in SHARP incidents since this command took over."
Currently the 348th Quartermaster Company, 194th CSSB, holds the 501st SBDE SHARP streamer.
Clarke stated her battalion is looking forward to winning another brigade SHARP streamer.
