CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune celebrated its newly renovated pharmacy with a ceremonial ribbon-cutting at the hospital’s pharmacy aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, Friday, Nov. 21.

During the seven-month renovation process, the pharmacy was temporarily relocated.

“We were able to move from the temporary pharmacy to the new one without closing down,” said Lt. Cmdr. Bruce Thompson, NHCL pharmacy department head.

The new pharmacy boasts 7,300 square feet in space, newer technologies and three additional windows for patients.

“The new pharmacy increased its windows from seven to ten,” said Thompson, a Fargo, North Dakota, native. “The pharmacy added 1,500 square feet for more room for drug storage and in-patient services. The additional space allows for more flexibility to get patients through and helps us keep up with an increased patient load.

With more windows the patients get their prescriptions faster, said Jessica Tessier, a certified pharmacy technician at NHCL. The automated machines which fill prescriptions helps speed up the process and the calling system helps the staff visualize what is going on.

The pharmacy’s new queuing system provides better data for serving patients. The system allows the staff to improve their efficiency enabling them to shift around and react in real time.

“I can tell each day the pharmacy is improving,” said Tessier, a New Bern, North Carolina, native. “The other day we were down to no patients, compared to day one where there were patients waiting in the hallway.”

Patients who utilize the pharmacy can also look forward to upcoming renovations to the Base Exchange’s pharmacy, scheduled to start January.
