    JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORDThe 571st Sapper Company, 864th Engineer Battalion, conducted live fire demolition training at Yakima Training Center in November. Soldiers completed multiple ranges including using Bangalores to breach wire obstacles.

    The unit also falls under 555th Engineer Brigade, 7th Infantry Division stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.

    A sapper, also called a combat engineer, is a combatant or soldier who performs a variety of military engineering duties such as bridge-building, laying or clearing minefields, demolitions, field defenses and general construction.

    Sappers also conduct road and airfield construction and repair. They are also trained to serve as infantry personnel in defensive and offensive operations. A sapper's duties are devoted to tasks involving facilitating movement of friendly forces and impeding those of enemies.
