    21st Theater Sustainment Command

KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany – Around 60 command sergeants major from 21st Theater Sustainment Command subordinate brigades and battalions, TSC headquarters staff sergeants major, first sergeants, master sergeants and selected junior noncommissioned officers converged on the Armstrong Club at the Vogelweh Military Complex for a senior enlisted leader "Empowerment Seminar" held Nov. 19-20.

The event, organized and led by Command Sgt. Maj. Rodney J. Rhoades, the 21st TSC's senior enlisted leader, included robust discussion of current service, Soldier, doctrinal, policy and leadership issues.

The leaders received briefings on hot contemporary topics including the Army profession, Army ethics, recent changes to key Army leadership doctrine and regional uniform policies, transitions and the Soldier for Life program, the new Army evaluation system, proposed noncommissioned officer education system innovations, finance and the Sergeant Morales Club. Briefers included command and staff sergeants major, military and civilian subject matter experts and even an Army lawyer serving with the TSC judge advocate general's office.

The innovative session featured dynamic new approaches to leadership training, including the participation of 10 junior NCOs, who offered "first-line" leaders' perspectives on command climate, policies and practices. The junior NCOs directly engaged senior leaders on important Soldier issues and concerns. A series of realistic scenarios challenged the leaders to explore and justify alternative approaches to discipline and professional development.

The NCOs also participated in physical fitness sessions, meals and an enlisted leaders' social event.

"This is an extremely valuable coaching and mentorship venue," Rhoades said after the event. "I think it was particularly useful for our senior enlisted leaders to hear from our junior NCOs. The session generated some outstanding dialogue, feedback and some constructive ideas about issues we're facing day in and day out in our formations. We're definitely going to build on some of these ideas during the next session.

"The interaction among the leaders, from our most seasoned command sergeants major to the most junior sergeant, was enormously beneficial," the command sergeant major added. "The professional dialogue, informal discussion and social interaction built camaraderie and esprit. We learn from each other and develop as leaders every time we meet. Our team grows stronger with every session and every event."
