FORT STEWART, Ga. – Lt. Col. Michael Biankowski assumed command of 4-3 Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Nov. 14, during a ceremony held at Marne Gardens on Fort Stewart, Ga.

“We want to welcome the Biankowski family to coastal Georgia,” said Col. Thomas Gukeisen, commander of 4th IBCT, in his address at the ceremony. “Mike is no stranger to Fort Stewart having served back here in the late 1990’s. He’s a proven combat leader.”

The Sentinel Battalion was constituted on June 24, 2004, as part of the Army’s modularity initiative, a move to restructure combat forces to make them more agile and flexible.

Biankowski comes back to Fort Stewart after serving a tour with NATO as the infrastructure, storage and supply branch head and base engineer at Joint Forces Command in Naples, Italy.

“It’s great to return to Fort Stewart after 16 years,” said Biankowski, who was born in Seoul, Republic of Korea. “We appreciate your warm welcome.”

Gukeisen said Biankowski is the right fit for the battalion at this time, beyond his combat experience, as the Vanguard Brigade is restructuring.

“Mike also, being an engineer, without a doubt, is the absolute right person to lead this battalion through its reorganization and pivotal transition from a special troops battalion to the brigade engineer battalion,” Gukeisen said.

“Col. Gukeisen, thank you for giving me the privilege and opportunity to command. I am humbled to be given the solemn responsibility of leading the fine sons and daughters of our great nation,” said Biankowski. “These soldiers standing here in front of you are the enablers … that provide critical support to the Vanguard Brigade to ensure its success on the battlefield.”

Biankowski finished his address at his assumption of command ceremony with a paraphrase from the Athenian Ephebic Oath.

“I will not disgrace the soldier's arms, nor abandon the comrade who stands at my side; but whether alone or with many, I will fight defend things sacred and profane. I will hand down my country not lessened, but larger and better than I have received it,” he said.
