On the Run: Run to bring awareness, raise money

    JACKSONVILLE, NC, UNITED STATES

    11.20.2014

    Story by Cpl. Mary Carmona

For some people, acting on behalf of others is more of an
incentive than acting for personal gain.

Running is one venue in which individuals can sacrifice time and effort to benefit those in need or bring awareness to a cause.

Not to mention, it gives the runner a purpose to lace up their shoes and a true sense of satisfaction upon crossing the finish
    line.

Marathons are one popular way to run for charity.

Runners can choose charities they wish to support or team up
with, and ask individuals to support their commitment to finish
the 26.2 miles by donating funds which will go to the organization of the runner’s choosing.

One easy way to raise money for a run is to enlist the services
of a website, such as www.gofundme.com, where you can create a venue for people to donate money straight to your cause.

People can also pledge a set amount for each mile the runner conquers.

Perhaps you don’t have a direct tie to any charities and aren’t
sure on whose behalf you’d like to run.

Or maybe you aren’t sure you’re ready to complete a full marathon.

There are websites you can visit listing charity runs taking
place throughout the nation and the specifics of each event.
For instance, www.runforcharity.com currently has a search
engine for 2014 charity running events. It’s as easy as selecting
the category you want to support (i.e. children, animals, etc.)
    and hitting the search button.

If you’re concerned you live too far from many of the big runs,
never fear, there are local charity runs as well.

Run for the Warriors is an annual race event consisting of
multiple races (5K, half-marathon, 1-mile run, etc.) and is dedicated to troops injured in Afghanistan or Iraq, their families and family members of fallen service members.

One of the runs takes place right here in Jacksonville, North
Carolina. While the 2014 run already took place, keep your eye
out on details for next year and start training.

Crushing personal records and fulfilling life-long goals of
running an ungodly amount of miles is great, but it seems to
me that running to make someone else’s life better could be
    even better.
