    ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Lonnie L. Wangen of Horace, N.D., has been named the 67th President of the National Association of State Directors of Veterans Affairs (NASDVA). Wangen is the 3rd North Dakota state director of Veterans Affairs to be named president of the NASDVA. It has been 46 years since then ND Commissioner Lloyd Zander was named NASDVA President in 1968. Wangen has served as North Dakota’s Commissioner of Veterans Affairs since 2008.

    Wangen's leadership and dedication to the service of our Veterans has been evident to his colleagues as they unanimously selected him to lead their organization.

    While serving as the President of the NASDVA’s, Wangen will have several telephone and in person meetings with the Federal VA’s top leadership to include VA Secretary Robert McDonald.

    Wangen has already made several trips to the Federal VA’s Central Office to meet with the Secretary and Under-Secretaries to discuss the future plans for the VA. Commissioner Wangen stated “It is a good thing that North Dakota will have the ear of the top VA leadership, this is an opportunity to bring any of our Veterans concerns directly to those who can make the big decisions”.

    The National Association of State Directors of Veterans Affairs is comprised of the Directors, Commissioners and Secretaries from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and the 5 territories; Guam, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Northern Mariana Islands and the US Samoa Islands.

    Wangen is a life-time resident of North Dakota. He grew up in Harvey ND with parents Floyd and Vaughn Wangen. After graduating high school he moved to Fargo to attend NDSU the University of Mary where he received a Masters’ degree in Management and a Masters in Business Administration. As a Member of the ND National Guard Commissioner Wangen served overseas in Panama, Nicaragua, Germany, Korea and was deployed to Iraq in 2003-2004. He now resides in Horace ND with his wife and two sons.
