BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan – Afghan National Security Forces, along with coalition forces, sat down with village elders and tribal leaders in the village of Shkin located in the Bermel District of Paktika Province Dec. 15.

The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the security situation in the province and the progress of various construction projects in the area.

Elders from the Wazeri, Kharouti and Solmanzai tribes attended the Shura along with Shkin Village elders and representatives of the Afghan Border Police, Afghan National Police, Afghan National Army and coalition forces.

Sher Nawaz, the Wazeri elder, described how the National Liaison, which is an Afghan group from Kabul, is planning to set up 13 Shuras in the Ahmedzai's tribal area and 27 Shuras in the Odhmanzai's tribal areas in the district. Village elders also expressed their pleasure with ANSF efforts to maintain security in the district, which borders Pakistan.

"This is a significant advancement in the governance of the tribal areas," explained Army Maj. Chris Belcher, Combined Joint Task Force-82 spokesman. "Getting village elders to come together with tribal leaders and Afghan National Security Force representatives will lead to better security and greater understanding among the citizens in the region."

During the Shura, the elders also discussed various construction projects and partnerships in the district.

"The elders are pleased with the roads and other projects," said a coalition forces' Soldier.

Recent projects have included the installation of a solar-powered lighting system along the village's bazaar road, repair and repainting of the village school, building a soccer field for the children and the rest of the community to use, and construction of a road from Shkin to the border village of Patawpi.

"These projects represent the commitment of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, the international community, and the ANSF to enhance quality of life and support provincial governments, especially in rural areas," Belcher said.
