ROUND ROCK, Texas - Each Veterans Day, schools around the country take time to acknowledge and recognize the service members who have fought in our nation's wars. For Veterans' Hill Elementary School in Hutto, Texas, the day marks a special occasion for a community deeply rooted in military service.

On Nov. 7, 2014, the school hosted its Veterans Day celebration, inviting students' family members who have served for a recognition assembly, followed by a day of learning about the day's significance from local service members. The Texas National Guard's Joint Task Force 136 (Maneuver Enhancement Brigade) was on site with a display of equipment, a tactical vehicle, and official guest speaker for the event.

"Today we are teaching the kids about Veterans Day and a little bit about what we do," said Kaycee Stocker, a combat medic with the brigade's headquarters company.

Students learned about the different branches through the school's event museum and visited the Veterans' Memorial at the main entrance.

"Today's event was amazing," said Michele Bischoffberger, principal for Veterans' Hill Elementary School. "We did today to honor all the veterans of our families and of our students and to also have the opportunity to recognize how our school got its name."

The school was built and dedicated in 2008 in honor of the nation's fighting forces that have served overseas. For the staff and students, Veterans Day is an especially important occasion, with so many ties to military service.

"It was a really nice event where we had all of our students together in one group with family members," said Amber Fountain, school counselor for Veterans' Hill Elementary School and spouse of a Texas Air Guardsman. "It was great getting the opportunity to recognize the students' family members and their service to our country and getting that chance to educate our students on why Veterans Day is important."

In addition to paying respects to their local veterans, the students also enjoyed applying their lessons in real-world contexts through the celebration's veterans museum.

"They really enjoy getting to do things that are different and getting to apply some of the things that they've been learning in their social studies classes," said Fountain. "Especially some of our older students, who come through today looking at pictures of old planes. They recognize that from things that they are learning about the wars."
