FORT STEWART, Ga. – Company, battalion, and brigade command teams from 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, air lifted to a training area, Nov. 6, on Fort Stewart, Ga., for a special leader professional development meeting about a future combined arms live-fire exercise.

“The brigade is preparing for Vanguard Focus,” said Capt. Richard Vespa, the training officer and assistant planner for 4th IBCT. “We wanted to give time for company commanders to prepare their plan and think how they’re going to execute it.”

The meeting for the leaders from across the Vanguard Brigade involved a walkthrough of the entire combined arms live fire exercise including objectives, lines of advancement, mission requirements and even specific performance measures expected of the companies.

“Walkthroughs like this really give an idea of what you’re planning,” said Capt. James Maikranz, commander of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 4th IBCT. “We understand exactly what we’re asking people to do.”

Maikranz, whom was taking a tactical pause from his own battalion’s training event, added it was important to him as a commander to know the terrain so as to know what was realistic to ask of his soldiers and to plan how the mission would be timed.
“My biggest take away is seeing exactly what it looks like on the ground,” he said.

The Vanguard Focus training event will begin in January and each battalion has a 21-day training model, including the five days spent on the combined arms live fire exercise.

“Most of the companies have gone through squad live fires and platoon live fires, but they haven’t done a company live fire,” said Vespa. “In addition it isn’t just a company live fire, it’s a combined arms live fire. They’re going to have artillery and aircraft support.”
Vespa added he felt this is an excellent opportunity for company commanders and platoon leaders to get some effective experience controlling different assets in an exercise prior to going to the training mission at the Joint Readiness Training Center at Fort Polk, Louisiana, slated for summer of next year.
