SAN FRANCISCO - Coast Guard and partner agencies responded to a capsized fishing vessel with multiple people in the water near Bodega Bay Saturday morning.

Coast Guard Sector San Francisco received multiple simultaneous notifications at approximately 10 a.m., one from a kayaker via a 911 relay, as well as another via VHF-FM radio distress relay from a good Samaritan and an emergency position-indicating radio beacon alert for a capsized vessel and people in the water near Seal Rock. A Coast Guard Station Bodega Bay response boatcrew and a Coast Guard Auxiliary vessel diverted to respond.

Once on scene, crews from Station Bodega Bay, Auxiliary, State Lifeguards, Bodega Bay and Monte Rio Fire Departments worked to recover four unresponsive persons from the water and transferred them ashore to awaiting emergency medical service personnel at Station Bodega Bay. A Sonoma County Sheriff's helicopter crew aboard Henry-1 recovered one injured but responsive person from the rocks and brought him ashore, where he confirmed the vessel had a total of five people aboard.

"The cause of the accident remains under investigation, but commercial fishing is one of the most dangerous occupations in the United States," said Capt. Greg Stump, commander, Sector San Francisco. "Our thoughts are with the families and friends who lost loved ones today. Our partner agencies in Bodega Bay were extremely responsive, resulting in the quick rescue of one individual and the recovery of four who unfortunately did not survive the perils of the sea."
