FORT INDIANTOWN GAP, Pa. - The All Army Women’s basketball team training camp returned here this month after a two-year hiatus-the camp was canceled last year due to budget constraints.
“It’s good to be back,” said the team’s coach Army Lt. Col. William “Nate” Johnson, stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. “I’m confident going into this year’s tournament we’ll be successful.”
The All Army Women’s Basketball team is one of the most decorated in the armed services. The team hasn’t had a win at the Armed Forces Tournament though since 2010.
Coach Johnson has several strategies to ensure the team wins this year. “We’ve got a new assistant coach (Staff Sgt. Coleman Bender) and it’s been great. He brings new ideas and fresh eyes. Also I’ve got four veterans from the All Armed Forces team playing on this team.”
Eighteen women vied for 12 spots on this year’s team. The team will be competing against the other services in the Armed Forces Championship hosted by the Marine Corps at Camp Pendleton, California, Nov. 6-14.
All Army Sports Camps are hosted at Fort Indiantown Gap for volleyball, basketball, Tae Kwon Do and softball. All Army Sports directly supports Soldier readiness and well-being. Following the motto, “Soldiers first – Athletes second.” All Army Sports provides athletically-skilled Soldier athletes the opportunity to compete at the highest level their particular sport allows.
