MONROVIA, Liberia - Cement blocks, sewage pipes, electrical parts and other materials used in constructing treatment units for Ebola patients in Liberia are being procured by Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support, an organization official said.

The materials include lumber, plumbing and much of the construction equipment, including saws, generators, welding machines, machetes, paint brushes and hammers, said construction materials manager Marko Graham from Troop Support Construction and Equipment.

The materials provided are part of DLA’s support of Operation United Assistance, the Defense Department operation supporting the U.S. Agency for International Development-led effort to contain Ebola in West Africa, said Army Lt. Col. Patrick Taylor, DLA Troop Support Europe & Africa commander.

U.S. military engineers are working with members of the armed forces of Liberia to construct the ETUs.

During construction, builders are wearing hard hats, hearing protection, safety glasses and leather gloves, also procured through DLA Troop Support, Graham said.

The materials required for the ETUs are evolving as more are built, Taylor said.

“The requirements are becoming clearer,” Taylor said. “We can see the light of the tunnel when it comes to developing the requirements.”

Most of the construction materials are being provided through DLA Troop Support Construction and Equipment’s Maintenance, Repair and Operations program, Taylor said. The program provides tailored support for facilities maintenance, public works and civil engineering projects for Defense Department customers around the world.

DLA is working with the U.S. Africa Command, the U.S. Agency for International Development, and U.S. and international allies to anticipate and respond to logistics requirements for Operation United Assistance.

DLA has also delivered initial supplies of food, water, cots and tents to Monrovia, Liberia, and is working to pre-position other items.

“We’re in sprinting mode now and have been for the last 30 days,” Taylor said about the OUA support. “We don’t see it letting up any time soon.”
