HUNTER ARMY AIRFIELD, Ga. – Several faculty members from Armstrong State University got a firsthand look at Hunter Army Airfield, and experienced what a day in the life of a 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade Soldier is like Oct. 24.

Early in the morning before the sun rose, the faculty conducted physical readiness training (PRT) with Soldiers from Headquarters Support Company, 603rd Aviation Support Battalion, 3rd CAB. The faculty members performed PRT which consists of several warm up stretches and exercises.
The officer in charge of the tour, 1st Lt. Donald Ingham, HSC, 603rd ASB, said it was a unique way for the faculty to walk a mile in the Soldiers combat boots.

“A lot of the professors don’t understand the leeways Soldiers ask for on a daily basis,” Ingham said. “Whereas after they have seen the tour, it makes it easier for them to understand why Soldiers make the special requests they do.”

After PRT the group got a history lesson from Hunter Army Airfield public affairs officer Steve Hart, they toured the engagement skills training facility where they watched exercises designed to hone the skills of a rifleman.

The grand finale of the tour allowed the group onto the flightline to view and sit in the airframes currently flown by the 3rd CAB. The UH-60M Black Hawk helicopter, the CH-47 Chinook helicopter and the OH-58D Kiowa Warrior scout helicopter wowed the group, but also impressed a certain faculty member who just happens to be a veteran.

Dorothy Kempson is currently the assistant director of academic support at the Hinesville ASU campus, and also a veteran of the United States Army having served from 1988 to 1992.

“This is amazing to come out and view the different helicopters, especially the Chinook,” Kempson said. “I think it’s great that ASU is working with the 3rd CAB and HAAF to do this event so that we can be educated on just exactly what some of our students do here at HAAF.”

Phil Gore, military and veterans coordinator for ASU, said it was his goal to create a more veteran and military friendly campus at ASU. One of the ways he is accomplishing that goal is bringing the faculty on the tour so they can see that these Soldiers don’t just crawl around in the mud all day. They also bring a lot of valuable experience to the classroom.

“I’m glad we got to bring the staff out here so that they could experience a day in the life of Soldier,” Gore said. “These people do a lot of great things for our nation, and this tour allows them to really get a feel for what these men and women are actually doing on a daily basis.”
