WASHINGTON – Division West missile defense trainers from Fort Bliss, Texas, recently completed an Operational Readiness Evaluation in the National Capital Region for a South Carolina Army National Guard Air Defense Artillery unit.

The 1st Battalion, 362nd Air Defense Artillery Regiment, 5th Armored Brigade, teamed up with the 263rd Army Air and Missile Defense Command, to put 263rd ADA through a series of evaluations prior to validation.

Under the direction of the 263rd AAMDC, 1-362nd ADA trainers set out to validate the South Carolina Guard Soldiers’ performance during the on-going National Capitol Region defense mission.

The ORE allows the leadership of the 1- 362nd ADA and 263rd AAMDC, the opportunity to ensure the unit is operating to standard, and providing tactics, techniques, and procedures for improvements as well as lessons learned. This so for units that will take charge of the mission in the future, like the Ohio National Guard’s 1st Battalion, 174th Air Defense Artillery Regiment.

The ORE consisted of an in-depth evaluation of Avenger, the National advanced surface-to-air missile system, and sensor sites within the National Capitol Region. Observer-coach/trainers focused on site security, maintenance, training, overall knowledge, and daily operations.

"Inspections such as this are what keep a unit from becoming complacent while on mission," said Sgt. 1st Class Richard Wilson, a 1-362nd observer-coach/trainer and Avenger master gunner.

Wilson went on to say that the unit performed to standard and that during the after action review the 362nd observer-coach/trainers provided valuable recommendations that were sure to increase mission readiness, and validate current operations.
