CAMP HIGASHI-CHITOSE, Japan—U.S. Army medical professionals have treated nearly 400 Soldiers since Oct. 1, in support of Orient Shield 14.

Soldiers from the Brigade Support Medical Company, 2nd Brigade Support Battalion, 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division from Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash., also known as ‘Charlie Med’ are in Japan supporting an annual bilateral training exercise co-hosted by the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force and U.S. Army Japan, Oct. 27 – Nov. 7.

The exercise brings together the 2nd SBCT, 2nd Inf. Div. from JBLM and JGSDF members from the 11th Infantry Regiment, 7th Armor Division, Northern Army for combined light infantry, squad-level and urban assault training.

Joining the Charlie Med. staff are medics from the 1st Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment and 2nd Battalion, 1st. Infantry Regiment, 2nd SBCT from JBLM. The Soldiers will be on hand to support medical emergencies in the field during the training exercise and provide care during daily sick call hours.

According to 2nd Lt. Leah Woods, a treatment platoon leader assigned to Charlie Med., sick call is offered to Soldiers twice daily - morning and evening. Seventy-five percent of Soldiers seen during sick call are for minor ailments such as flu and cold symptoms and the other 25 percent are physical training and sports related injuries.

“My main objective is to manage Soldiers’ care,” said Woods.

Between the two daily sick calls and follow-up appointments, the medics see upwards of 30 Soldiers per day. Other sick call services include dental and mental healthcare. With the help of the local JGSDF dispensary [hospital] U.S. medics have access to x-ray and lab services that otherwise would not be available to them.

“If a major medical emergency were to occur, we have the ability to coordinate with a local hospital, which is only ten minutes away,” Woods explained.

“We’re lucky to have a set up that is conducive to handle anything from minor sick call to serious injuries,” said 1st Lt. Chris Yacullo, a Physician Assistant with Charlie Med. “We can handle everything here required to stabilize a patient before ambulance services arrive,” Yacullo added.
