CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. - Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton held a Business 101 Course for transitioning commissioned and staff-noncommissioned officers at the Pacific Views Events Center here, Sept. 29.

Approximately 40 Marines and Sailors learned employment skills such as economic theory, modern business culture, contemporary perceptions of military personnel, goals and metrics and civilian business expectations to enable them to succeed in a civilian business environment.

“The business environment does not change as dangerously, but it changes more quickly and with more ambiguity than you’d find in planning and executing a single mission,” said Scott Brown, a business professor at the event. “We teach servicemembers economic theory and help them see environmental changes so that they can respond quickly and advance their future employer’s interests.”

The course also teaches transitioning leaders how to market their unique military skills into civilian business roles.

“It’s up to us as transitioning leaders to bridge the gap in perception of what civilian employers think we do, and what servicemembers are actually capable of,” said Master Sgt. Albert Asuncion, a motor transport maintenance chief with 1st Maintenance Battalion, 1st Marine Logistics Group. “Business 101 really helped me learn how to bridge that gap and made me more confident about marketing myself to future employers.”

The course was taught at the graduate school level and created by former military members and volunteer senior business executives in conjunction with Marine Corps Community Services.

“The civilian business world needs the skills of military leaders – organization, leadership, focus and discipline, to remain competitive in the global environment,” said Rick Lamprecht, founder of the Business 101 Course. “We want military leaders to be able to better market themselves and use those skills to succeed in a corporate environment.”

The course is held three times a year and is recommended for commissioned and staff- noncommissioned officers with a year left in their contracts. For more information on participating in the course, contact MCCS at (760) 725-5355.
