CAMP HIGASHI-CHITOSE, Japan – Over 700 American and Japanese runners competed in an Army 10-Miler shadow run while participating in Orient Shield 14 here, Oct 15.

The U.S. Army Soldiers from the 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division from Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash. are on their third and final leg of their Pacific Pathways mission.

After completing exercises in Malaysia and Indonesia, Soldiers arrived in Japan where they are partnering with Japan Ground Self-Defense Forces (JGSDF) from the 11th Infantry Regiment, 7th Armor Division for combined light infantry, squad-level and urban assault training between October 27 and November 7.

“I wanted there to be an opportunity for those deployed on Pacific Pathways to be a part of the annual race held in Washington DC.,” said Capt. John Geracitano, 1st Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, who coordinated the race with help from the JGSDF.

The Army Ten-Miler is the second largest 10 mile road race in the U.S. and third in the world. The race begins and ends at the Pentagon in Arlington, Va. and runs through the National Mall in Washington DC. The annual race attracts over 35,000 runners with proceeds from the race benefiting Army Morale, Welfare and Recreation programs and services for Soldiers and their families.
