LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan National Guard has been selected for the “Delivering on the Promise Honor Roll” award by the American Jobs for America’s Heroes, a military-hiring campaign sponsored by a number of non-profit organizations. The award recognizes outstanding commitment and leadership of agencies that make substantial efforts to help Guard members, Reservists and veterans gain civilian employment.
On Oct. 23, 2014, Army Brig. Gen. Michael Stone, the Michigan National Guard Assistant Adjutant General for Installations, traveled to Washington D.C., to receive the award on behalf of Army Maj. Gen. Gregory Vadnais, the MING Adjutant General and director of the DMVA and the rest of the Michigan National Guard.
Of the 15 agencies selected, three National Guard organizations from California, Michigan and North Carolina, were chosen to receive the award. The Michigan National Guard was selected for their implementation of several strategies over the last three years to link troops with employment and vocational training opportunities.
Recognizing the difficulties that some Guard members had in acquiring full-time employment, various Michigan military bases and armories hosted job fairs. In addition, the Michigan National Guard invited employers to Guard units in high unemployment areas. Another layer of support to Guard members was the decision to hire a civilian employment program officer to serve as a liaison between troops and employers.
“The mission is critical—there are tens of thousands of highly trained and motivated National Guard members and veterans who will provide the integrity and adaptability needed in the American private sector,” said Steve Nowlan, CEO of Center for America, an American Jobs for America’s Heroes sponsor.
For the past three years, reducing the high unemployment rate of service members has been a priority and the Michigan Department of Military and Veteran’s affairs leadership has been deliberate to lead employment efforts for Michigan’s current and former military servicemen and women. To date, more than 500 job placements are the result of these efforts.
