SCHOFIELD BARRACKS, HAWAII – Schofield Barracks and U.S. Army Hawaii opened the doors to the Army’s Sexual Harassment and Assault Response and Prevention Resource Center with a ribbon cutting ceremony Oct. 17 signifying a consolidated effort to combat sexual harassment and assault.

“This center will bring together our SHARP victim advocate services, investigative, legal and all support personnel,” 25th Infantry Division Commanding General Maj. Gen. Charles A. Flynn said. “Here the victims, family members, witnesses and others can interact with our SHARP response team in a protected environment.”

Not only is this a safe environment, but also the design of the center will support victims who want to be discreet.

“We have two sides to this building. We have the restricted side for a victim to come in and no one will know that they are here,” Lisa Charles said. “We have taken their potential feelings into account and took steps to ensure their privacy.”

“We are all in one place so we can have dialogue rather then going from building to building. We can collaborate better,” Charles said. “This is a pilot program and we are one of 12 installations that have been selected.”

Charles, the senior commander of the 25th ID SHARP program, feels that one of the Army’s best ideas was the opening of the SHARP Resource Center. This center offers a multidisciplinary approach with the Criminal Investigative Command, prosecutors and special victim counsel.

One of the highlights of the unique center is the Special Victims Counsel, which aids a sexual assault survivor in obtaining an attorney free of charge
    .
The new SHARP Resource Center supports one of the Army Chief of StaffGen. Raymond Odierno’s top priorities- eradicating sexual assault and sexual harassment in the Army. Odierno states in a letter to the force that the Army is committed to the safety and security of every Soldier, civilian and Family member.

“The prevention of sexual harassment and sexual assault is the Army’s top priority,” Flynn said. “No one in our Army community should ever have to live under the fear or danger of sexual harassment or sexual assault.”

The resource center adjacent to Schofield Barracks health clinic will provide compassionate care and protection to survivors.

“We are hoping that a victim will feel comfortable coming here,” Charles said. “We want victims to know that this is for them. This facility is all about them to make them whole again.”
