    3rd Combat Aviation Brigade

HUNTER ARMY AIRFIELD, Ga. – The Soldiers of the 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade hosted several members of Hilton Head Navy League on a tour of Hunter Army Airfield Oct. 15.

“It’s a great time to be a Soldier on active duty,” said Col. John D. Kline, commander, 3rd CAB. “That wasn’t always the case, and we owe that to these gentlemen who righted the ship after Vietnam.”

Kline was referring to a time when veterans of war were not always given the thank you they deserved for their service. Under his command, he has continued to ensure the 3rd CAB’s legacy continues to be one of giving back to the community.

According to Navy retired Capt. Bill Baker, president, Hilton Head Council of the United States Navy League, one of their missions is to provide insight to the civilian community about just what the military does, and its importance.

“We also support the military through various fundraising activities,” said Baker. “This year we raised $5,000.00 for the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, and we’re proud of that. We hope to triple that next year.”

After a bus tour of HAAF, the group toured the engagement skills training facility where they watched and participated in exercises designed to hone the skills of a rifleman. Skills such as the zero process, and a simulated M4 rifle range were on display for the enthusiastic supporters. The group also watched as several Soldiers put their skills to the test during a virtual live-fire scenario.

The group was also given a tour of the flight line where they were able to view every air frame the brigade flies, including the AH-64 Apache Longbow attack helicopter, the UH-60M Black Hawk helicopter, the CH-47 Chinook helicopter and the OH-58D Kiowa Warrior scout helicopter.

Another member of the Navy League, Edmund Schnatterly enjoyed getting up close and personal with the aircraft that were proudly displayed.

“For me, the helicopters were the highlight of the trip,” Schnatterly said. “I got to see the Apache up close. She’s the star of the show in my eyes.”

Schnatterly said he really enjoyed the tour, and was certain everyone else did as well.

“We certainly appreciate being allowed to come on the base and see everything,’ Schnatterly continued. “We love to be able to see the troops and thank them for their service.”
