NORFOLK, Va. - A local Sailor was honored as the Military Citizen of the Year during the 2014 Samuel T. Northern Military Citizen of the Year ceremony, hosted by the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce held at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott, Oct. 9.
Electronics Technician 3rd Class Jasmin L. Lamanna, stationed at Naval Computer & Telecommunications Area Master Station, Atlantic Detachment (NCTAMS LANT), Hampton Roads, was chosen as this year’s honoree for her dedication of volunteer work in her command and community.
“It feels so incredibly awesome to have been nominated and actually win this award,” said Lamanna. “I can’t tell you how grateful I am.”
The ceremony is an annual event where one local service member is recognized for his or her personal community involvement through volunteerism.
“This is an opportunity for the Hampton roads community … to say thanks and honor you who give so much back. And it’s interesting, this particular recognition ceremony, because we have military recognition ceremonies throughout the year and those recognition ceremonies are to thank you for your service. And today, we as well thank you for your service,” said Bryan K. Stephens, president and CEO, Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce. “But the specific purpose of this ceremony is to thank you for what you’re doing in addition to your service. This is about you all giving back to this community and making it a better community than what it would be if you weren’t involved.”
Within her command, Lamanna volunteers as the Assistant Command Fitness Leader, as a Command Assessment Team member, as the Junior Sailors Association Volunteer Coordinator, and the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Victim Advocate where she actively seeks out ways to promote sexual assault prevention and awareness through command events.
Since July 2013, Lamanna has volunteered 436 hours providing Emergency Medical Services for Virginia Beach as a first responder to emergency situations regarding medical issues, traumatic injuries and accident scenes. Through her volunteerism, she has helped save the City of Virginia Beach approximately $10,000 in services rendered.
Lamanna also dedicated more than 106 volunteer hours toward Drug Education for Youth (DEFY) Summer Camp where she mentored, developed and trained children ages 9 – 12 years old through drug education, leadership and character development in efforts to enhance the quality of life for military personnel and their families.
Additionally, Lamanna has volunteered 12 hours at the Ronald McDonald House where she helped create a family-centered caring environment by preparing home-cooked breakfasts through the Comfort Food Program for families staying in the Ronald McDonald House.
“I think that volunteerism is one of the most foundational things, as Sailors, that we can do … Giving back to the community is what it is all about,” Lamanna said. “There are so many other things you can be involved in, drinking, partying, that you can do with your time, so I think volunteering is one of the most important things you can do.”
