CAMEROON - “PRE’T-MARCHE-TIRE!” shouted corporals Isaac Althoff and Micah Gray in unison while coaching on the rifle range during a marksmanship course with the Cameroonian Naval Commando Company, or the COPALCO, in Cameroon.

“Some of the Cameroonian Marines we work are extremely young and only have a year in military service,” said 1st Lt. Christopher Kohn, a Clermont, Florida, native and the officer-in-charge of Security Cooperation Team-5B. “A lot of the information we shared with this group was brand new for them.”

Althoff, a Guttenbertg, Iowa, native and Gray, a Tonawanda, New York, native were tasked as instructors for SCT-5B’s marksmanship training portion of the engagement.

“The range was a modified table three and table four,” said Gray. “We did as much practical application training as we could, and later in the week we practiced the course of fire as much as we could to get the COPALCO ready for the live fire range.”

Table three and four of the Marine Corps marksmanship program involves movement towards a static target, firing at unknown distances and night shoots with night vision goggles and infrared lasers.

Althoff and Gray made the English to French language barrier seem easy, and excelled as marksmanship coaches even saying the commands “shoot-move-fire” in French.

“Althoff and Gray set the bar high. They we’re professional, knew what they were doing and how to properly utilize their interpreters,” said Kohn.

By trade, both corporals are engineering equipment electrical systems technicians, but they stepped out of their usual day-to-day military occupational specialty to teach the COPALCO basic marksmanship tactics, techniques and procedures. Each of these Marines exceeded performance expectations, thereby earning them the worthy title, Warriors of the Week.

Warrior of the Week was created to recognize the Marines and Sailors of Special-Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force Crisis Response -Africa who play a significant role in the day-to-day operations that lead to mission success. Sometimes these accomplishments go under the radar, thus we try to capture the moments so that everyone else can appreciate their value.
