JOINT BASE MYER-HENDERSON HALL, Va. - The Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall Active Duty Men Masters (40 years and older) team took third place in this year’s Army Ten-Miler, with a combined finishing time of 4:14:04.

Team members included Air Force Lt. Col. Antonio Eppolito, Army Lt. Christopher Brock, Lt. Col. Christopher Wong, Lt. Col. Daniel Wallace, Maj. Joseph Buccino, Staff Sgt. Michael Creadon, and Sgt. 1st Class Scott Weinhold.

Eppolito was the top Active Duty Men Masters finisher, completing the race in 59:25. Army Pfc. Brad Nabong was the Active Duty Men (39 years and under) top finisher with a time of 1:00:41. The top Active Duty joint base female (39 years and under) finisher was Senior Airman Erica Gonzalez, who crossed the finish line in 1:20:14.

Participants from the joint base joined more than 35,000 runners for the 30th annual edition of the run through Washington, D.C., and Arlington Oct. 12. Eleven shadow runs took place with 8,500 participants in locations including Afghanistan, Cuba and South Korea.

“You want to push yourself out of your comfort zone,” said Sgt. Curtisha A. Lewis, a graphics designer for Headquarters, Department of the Army, who finished with a time of 1:27:56.

Before the runners took to the course, Secretary of the Army John McHugh singled out wounded warriors who participated in the race for a special welcome and urged everyone to remember those who are deployed while they ran.

“Thirty years, 300 miles, more than 300,000 finishers and today, each one of you, more than 35,000 strong, are going to add to that wonderful record,” he said.

Produced by the U.S. Army Military District of Washington, the Army Ten-Miler is the third largest 10 mile race in the world. Its mission is to promote the Army, build esprit de corps, support fitness goals and enhance community relations.

“Thirty years of showing who the Army is, what we do, what we represent and today we probably have our biggest turn-out ever,” Army Chief of Staff Gen. Raymond T. Odierno said as he also singled out the race’s wounded warrior athletes for praise.

“They continue to show us what the term resiliency means, what the term ‘never quit’ means, what the term ‘Army Strong’ means,” he said.

More than 85 wounded warriors and wheelchair athletes took part in this year’s race.

Solonei R. Da Silva of Brazil came in first in the men’s division with a time of 48:20 while Kerri Gallagher of Arlington finished first in the women’s division with a time of 54:50. Army Ten-Miler Race Director James A. Vandak congratulated all the race’s finishers.

“The Army Ten-Miler is the spirit of sport and the spirit of a nation,” he said. “We hope that all our runners experienced this spirit and will be back to run again next year.”

All proceeds raised by the race go toward Army Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation programs for Soldiers and their families.

The Pentagon parking lot hosted race day events that included live music performed by the U.S. Army Band Downrange, a demonstration by the Golden Knights parachute team, “hooah” tents from Army installations around the world, activities for kids and interactive displays.

“It’s motivational being out here seeing all the people out early in the morning, ready to run the Army Ten-Miler,” said race volunteer Pfc. Cody Hayes of the 3d U.S. Infantry Division (The
Old Guard).d U.S. Infantry Division (The Old Guard).
