WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – “Is considered the father of the United States Navy?” An example of a "Jeopardy"-style question asked of Sailors of Navy Expeditionary Logistics Support Group (NAVELSG) during a celebration held Oct. 10 in honor of the Navy’s 239th birthday.

The event was held as part of a combined effort of NAVELSG’s Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) committee and First Class Petty Officer Association (FCPOA), and included a pasta lunch and "Jeopardy"-style trivia game hosted by Construction Mechanic 2nd Class Ronald Casasanta as a unique way of bringing together a celebration of 239 years of history and heritage.

“The committees did an impressive job with coordinating setup, lunch, entertainment and CM2 Casasanta's portrayal of Alex Trebek was a hit!” said Chief Boatswain’s Mate Diedra Amaya. “Our command really takes pride in heritage and diversity events. We always come away having learned something.”

The trivia game portion of the event was not for the faint of heart; time and careful consideration were put into the questions and rules of the game with the intent to challenge both the teams playing and the audience.

“I was surprised and humbled at the knowledge base of our contestants,” said Casasanta. “Some of the questions were not of a generic type, we wanted to make the game more challenging.”

The trivia event was made up of three teams of three people, comprised both of civilian and military personnel of NAVELSG, with questions crossing the spectrum of topics from famous quotes, historic battles, famous ships, dirt sailors and bluejacket.

“It was a really well-thought-out event and fun for all,” said Bill Dansey, NAVELSG Training Systems administrator. “I was really honored to have the opportunity to cut the cake.”

Dansey and Seaman Recruit Lina Romero-Vargas had the honor of cutting the cake as the oldest and youngest Sailor in attendance.

“Many of our civilians here at NAVELSG are retired or in the reserves,” said Stacey Oitzman, N1 department head. “I thought it was a great way of integrating both civilian and military together, I know it meant a lot to Bill to be asked to cut the cake.”

Planning for the Navy’s 240th birthday celebration is already on the minds of some of the Sailors of NAVELSG.

“It was interesting to see what people know while having a few laughs at the same time,” said Casasanta. “I look forward to hosting this again next year, it was a good time.”

NAVELSG is home-ported in Williamsburg, Virginia, with an active battalion located at Cheatham Annex and forward-deployed detachments and Reserve battalions located across the United States.

NAVELSG provides Sailors with the knowledge and skills needed to support the fleet's surface and air-handling mission. More than 100 Sailors and civilians work hand-in-hand with the fleet and are dedicated to ensuring training is current and well-executed on behalf of 3,500 active duty and Reserve Sailors in the administration, logistics and training of their active and Reserve components.
