HUNTER ARMY AIRFIELD, Ga. - According to the Army Safety Center, the Army Motorcycle Mentorship Program is to establish voluntary installation-level motorcycle clubs where less experienced riders and seasoned riders can create a supportive environment of responsible motorcycle riding.

Riders assigned to 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade spent the day on Hunter Army Airfield, Oct. 9, improving proper techniques with their motorcycles and increasing overall awareness of the brigade program. The drill team from Harley Davidson-Daytona was there to assist motorcycle mentors in teaching proper techniques to riders.

Colonel John Kline, 3rd CAB commander, said these events instill the necessary training riders need, which adds increasing success to the Army program. Kline was there to talk with Soldiers along with Command Sgt. Maj. Mike Dove.

The noncommissioned officer from 3rd CAB responsible for planning the event was Staff Sgt. Jimmy Robinson, who said this event was to continue precedence through mentorship with riders of various skill levels.

“Younger riders look to more experienced riders. The groups we ride in set standards people adopt, good or bad. We need to be responsible riders,” Robinson said.

Chief Warrant Officer 2 Laquinsa Askew was there to assist Robinson and said the event allowed mentors to inspect rider packets—but for this event—inspectors changed units to ensure fresh eyes were looking for deficiencies.

Riders, in addition to packets, also had their insurance, license, Motorcycle Safety Foundation card, and signed commanding general’s policy letter for motorcycle riders inspected.

Staff Sergeant William Pendelton, 3rd Infantry Division Motorcycle Safety Noncommissioned Officer and mentor, attended the event to assist 3rd CAB mentors. Pendelton said he credits the success of the programs to the support of command teams throughout the division.

Pendelton said having the demonstration team here was a success and that seeing how they perform on their motorcycles gives Soldiers the confidence to know their motorcycles will perform the same way.

Pendelton said 3rd ID has not had any Class-A motorcycle accidents in the past fiscal year—proof that unit leaders are doing their part within formations to improve rider competency.

The demonstration team, led by director Roger White, performed demonstrations on sudden stopping, tight turns and picking up a motorcycle properly. White said the team has proven to riders that practice on the course will improve riding skills but the more the team gets out, the better.

“If we come out here and show you how to get the confidence that you need then that’s all that matters. If one person learns anything here, it’s well worth it for us,” White said.

Private First Class Alexander Alberti, Company D, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Aviation Regiment, said sitting in the sun on the flight line was a lot like work—Alberti is a Black Hawk mechanic.

“I’m glad they set up a course so we can have something to work on,” Alberti said.
