HOOVER, Ala. - A Hoover High School student was recognized Thursday, Oct. 2, for his accomplishments on and off the field during a pep rally before the school’s game against long-time rival Spain Park High School.

Christian Bell, a defensive end with Hoover’s football team, was selected to compete in the Marine Corps’ Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl on Jan. 4, 2015, in Carson, California.

Bell said he was excited and felt blessed to for his selection.

Bell, an 18-year-old senior at Hoover, is one of only about 100 students selected to play in the tournament from across the country and one of only three from the state of Alabama.

For those that know Bell, his selection isn’t a surprise.

“He’s an extremely hard worker,” said Adrian Abrams, the school’s defensive line coach. “Sometimes that phrase is just thrown around, but if you see him in the field, weight room or classroom, he is the hardest working person in the room.”

It’s that dedication and hard work that has made him a leader among his team and school.

“Some people lead by fear,” Abrams said. “Bell, he leads by example through his hard work.”

Something his parents say he has always done.

“He’s always been a leader and shined wherever he’s gone,” said Melissa West, his mother.

His selection has been a whirlwind, but he deserves it, added Danny West, his father.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity for him, and we are very proud,” he said.

The outgoing 6’4”, 220-pound Bell, who will graduate from Hoover High School this summer is committed to the University of Alabama and is scheduled to begin training shortly after graduating in May.

“I’m just really thankful to God, my family and coaches for this opportunity,” Bell said.
