    3rd Combat Aviation Brigade

FORT STEWART, Ga. – Soldiers from 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade hung up their combat boots during the 3rd Infantry Division retirement ceremony held at Club Stewart Sept. 25.

The 3rd CAB command team of Col. John D. Kline, and Command Sgt. Maj. James P. Snyder, along with Chief Warrant Officer 5 George Kelly, command chief warrant officer, were on hand to provide the keynote speech and facilitate the ceremony.

Kline gave the audience a little background as to what it was like when these retirees first enlisted in the Army. He described Army life down to the smallest detail, even including kitchen patrol (KP) duty.

“Today we take the opportunity to reflect on these Soldiers’ careers,” said Kline. “We will share in a few laughs, present them with a well deserved medal, and show our tremendous appreciation for their honorable service to our country.”

One of the Marne Air Soldiers retiring was 1st Sgt. Jeffrey A. Balkom. Balkom’s last duty before retiring was as first sergeant for Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd CAB. Balkom said he plans to stay in Savannah, Ga., for the immediate future.

“I’ve been lucky. I already have a job lined up that I will start in about two months,” said Balkom. “I’m looking forward to spending more time with my Family and playing some more golf.”

Another of the retirees from the 3rd CAB was Sgt. 1st Class Willie L. Walters, HHC, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Aviation Regiment. Walters said he owns a home in Richmond Hill, and plans to stay in the area.

“My plan is that I’m looking at employment [locally],” Walters said. “I’m finishing getting my education lined up and have two or three jobs in the pipeline.”

In his speech, Kline gave his opinion on the way the 3rd Infantry Division sends off its retirees.

“I’ve seen a lot of retirement ceremonies over the years, but at this place they do it right,” said Kline. “The 3rd Infantry Division takes care of its retirees.”
