H&HS, MWHS-2 face off during bi-annual field meet

II Marine Expeditionary Force   

Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron clinched the bi-annual field meet title against Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron 2 for the second consecutive time at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C., Sept. 26.

H&HS’s secured the trophy during the final event against MWHS-2, as 10 competitors from each squadron faced off in the tie-breaking tug-of-war.

“MWHS-2 put up a great fight throughout the entire meet,” said Sgt. Jason Nettles, an aviation ordnance system technician with H&HS. “It was surprising that it came down to the final event.”

Nettles was a first year member of the H&HS tug-of-war team.
“I was proud to represent my squadron and come out on top,” said Nettles, a native of Dallas. “Every time we have this field meet you can feel the competitiveness.”

More than 200 Marines of all ranks from both squadrons participated in 11 separate events, including soccer, a 7-ton truck-pull and multiple relay races.

“This meet is a great way to get Marines that are spread across the entire air station together to build camaraderie,” said Nettles.

The squadrons started the competition in 2004 and have kept the tradition alive, turning it into what is now a bi-annual event.
Lt. Col. Jeremy L. Gettings, commanding officer of H&HS, ended the meet with a brief speech, thanking all involved with the event for their participation.

“I would just like to thank all of you for doing the job that you do on a daily basis,” said Gettings. “Just keep in mind that this wing and this station simply could not run without your experience and hard work.”

According to Gettings, the meet offers a time for units to build camaraderie and share in either victory or defeat, building cohesion between the squadrons’ Marines and Sailors.

“Thank you from the bottom of my heart,” said Gettings. “Both myself and the CO of MWHS-2 appreciate your hard work and dedication.”
