MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. - October marks the start of many races, campaigns and events marking Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The Naval Health Clinic Cherry Point here, is taking this month to educate its beneficiaries about the dangers of breast cancer, the importance of getting checked and how to get involved in the fight to find a cure.
Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death in women across the United States, and is the second most common form of cancer behind skin cancer. Nearly one in eight women will develop it during their lifetime and approximately 2,000 cases per year will be diagnosed in men.
According to Michelle Miller, an RN and breast care coordinator with the NHCCP the most significant risk factors for breast cancer are gender, being a female; and age, getting older raises risk factors.
“There are more than two million breast cancer survivors in the U.S.,” said Miller. “Fortunately, a combination of early detection and more effective treatment is thought to be responsible for the steadily declining death rates.”
According to NHCCP personnel, women should have clinical breast exams every three years if under 40 years of age and annually if over 40.
“Breast cancer doesn’t care if you’re rich, poor, young, old, male or female,” said Miller. “It crosses all borders, religions, nationalities, ethnic groups and lifestyles.”
According to Dr. Marisa Weiss, president and founder of BreastCancer.org and a breast cancer survivor herself, only ten percent of breast cancers are due to genetic factors. The rest are related, either directly or indirectly, to one’s lifestyle and other unknown factors.
