MANSFIELD, Ohio – On Sept. 26, 2014, the 200th RED HORSE DET 1 will host a large event with Pioneer High School. Approximately 160 students will take a field trip to tour through the military facility and explore all of its equipment. The two groups will tour at 9 a.m. and the other at approximately 1 p.m.

RED HORSE stands for Rapid Engineer Deployable Heavy Operational Repair Squadron Engineer. The unit directly supports combat air power by providing a dedicated, flexible airfield anywhere in the world and any heavy construction and repair capability. The 200th RED HORSE consists of approximately 2,100 short ton vehicles and heavy construction equipment and is capable of being self-sufficient for 30 days. RED HORSE is a 404-person squadron. In Ohio the full 404-person team is made up of 202 at Camp Perry and 202 at the RED HORSE Detachment in Mansfield.

RED HORSE has everything they need to operate a bare-bones base from Engineers, Doctors, Security Forces to protect the base, Logistics, Services to cook their food and Supply to make sure to replenish anything that’s needed. Various shops are capable of horizontal and vertical construction. We have HVAC, Plumbers, Electricians, Power Production, and Airfield Operations.

A group of 80 students will arrive at the RED HORSE auditorium at 0900 and tour through three different shops. The Vehicle Maintenance Shop will expose students to many different types of equipment, the vehicle fleet, and the troops will explain the shop capabilities. The students will also visit Airfield Operation shops, where they will see short demonstrations of different Airfield Operations capabilities. Then they will go to Emergency Management functions. Here, they will have the opportunity to try out Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosives (CBRNE) equipment.

RED HORSE will have on display all of the heavy equipment and the students will possibly run some of the smaller machines. At approximately 1300 the second group of 80 students will start the same tour. The day is meant to introduce local students to the Ohio Air National Guard, and the 200th RED HORSE.

“We want them to explore how many different career opportunities there are in the Guard and the types of benefits available for its members” said 2nd Lt. Ashley Klase, RED HORSE Operations Officer in Charge (OIC). A recruiter will also be present to give more information to any of the students who are interested. “Educating local children about the Ohio Air National Guard is a way for the military to give back to the community. We want to try to give them a general understanding of why we are here and what we provide and how they can help.”

All media is invited to attend.
