Cherry Point personnel learn about credentials, certifications

MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, NC, UNITED STATES

CHERRY POINT, N.C. - More than 80 Marines, Sailors and civilians attended the Pearson VUE Lunch and Learn Event at the Jerry Marvel Training and Education Building at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C., Sept. 16.

The class was led by the Education Program of Personal and Professional Development Program in partnership with Pearson VUE Testing and the National Testing Center provided by Craven Community College. The guest speakers were: Sue Jackson, Director of Business Development Government and Military Pearson VUE, who partnered with DoD to build global credentialing test center networks; Tara Dean, Government and Business Development Manager, CompTIA, who partnered with DoD to align commercial certifications to military job roles; and Dr. Joseph Wescott, President of National Association of State Approving Agencies and the Executive Director of North Carolina State Approving Agency. Topics were in full support of the White House Credentialing Initiative, providing our Service members, dependents, and civilians with fast track options to a variety of certifications and credentials.

“The purpose of hosting this event is to ensure Cherry Point and surrounding communities know about the certifications and credentialing opportunities provided aboard the installation,” said Teresa H Allen, Education Services Officer. “Examinations are offered right here on the station, which saves the command time, travel expenses, money, and personnel.”

Speakers introduced the various types of workforce credentials and how they can benefit from them in different ways during the class. Workforce credentials provide a verification of qualification or competence issued by a relevant third party.

One type of credential is called a license. Licenses are knowledge and skill based credentials that are legally required for some occupations. Another type is a certification. A certification is an award earned by passing a test in a certain occupation or profession, according to Allen. Certifications are valued by employers as a demonstration of an employee’s knowledge, experience and skills.

“Certifications and credentials are a win-win for everyone,” said Allen. “They enhance our workforce and have a positive impact on Marines and their family’s quality of life while working here and when they transition into the civilian sector.”

According to Allen, work experience, including on-the-job training, internships, volunteering and temporary employment, are all excellent ways to develop skills and qualifications to better enhance a résumé.
“I attended this class to learn about credentials for future employment plans after I exit the military,” said Lance Cpl. Jason Locklear, an expeditionary airfield systems technician with H&HS. “The most beneficial part for me has definitely been the knowledge I learned about the websites I can go to and how and where to get certifications.”

There are various other optional credentials available for Service members seeking to enhance their knowledge. The Apprenticeship Program offers supervised, structured, on-the-job training combined with related technical instruction. Educational degrees or training courses are also available and can serve as qualifications for many occupations.

“It is really important to come to these classes because not everyone can pay for a university and this class informs us of the various credentials we can earn that are very important to outside civilian sector jobs,” said Locklear, a native of Flint, Mich. “I will be transitioning out of the military at the end of the year. I would definitely recommend this class to anyone who is transitioning. It has helped me get a very good idea of all the things I can do with the skills I already have.”
