CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. - When he’s not cooking for Marines, Sanchez, 21, from Tamuning, Guam, can be found out popping and locking to a funky beat.
In this interview Sanchez, who is a food service specialist for the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit, tells us where his passion for breakdancing comes from and how it helps him be a better Marine.
Q: What inspired you to join the Marine Corps?
A: I wanted to get out and travel and experience new things. Guam is such a small island, I wanted to branch out and see what I could do. I was also encouraged by my dad and grandfather. They were both in the Navy, so I wanted to step it up a notch and join a more hardcore military branch.
Q: What drove you to go into food service?
A: I like to cook, and cooking is simple.
Q: What do you enjoy most about your job?
A: Knowing that I make a difference. When we’re out in the field, I know the difference a hot meal can make for the Marines out there. One less [Meals ready to Eat] that they have to eat improves their morale so much. It’s pretty cool.
Q: Your job can be demanding, what do you do to relieve some of that pressure?
A: I like to dance and breakdance.
Q: Where did you first start breakdancing?
A: I saw an open circle in the street; people were breakdancing and they were doing some amazing things. They were flying in the air and doing things you just don’t see humans doing. So that caught my attention.
Q: How do you feel when you’re doing it?
A: When I get in the zone, I really listen to the beat. With breakdancing you move with a lot of passion. It’s just emotional. You move how you feel when you breakdance. It helps out a lot with stress because it’s tough physically. It just allows me to get it all out, so I do it a lot after work.
Q: Was it something hard to learn?
A: Yes it was. It was a lot of breaking your body and building it up. You keep practicing and get better.
Q: Who taught you how to breakdance?
A: I’m self-taught. I watch a lot of videos on YouTube and just try to copy what they do.
Q: How does breakdancing help you be a better Marine?
A: Breakdancing is really unique. You put your body through a lot, just like the Marine Corps. You put your body through a lot of things most people don’t. It’s special to see that. When I joined the Marine Corps it was a big accomplishment for me, the same when I do a move I’ve been working for a long time to do. It’s just dope.
Q: How long do you plan on continuing this hobby?
A: As long as it keeps inspiring and motivating me. Just like anything else. I can see myself doing this as long as I have the passion for this.
Q: What specifically do you like to do when breakdancing?
A: Just rocking to the beat. It’s all on you. When you step into an open circle all eyes are on you. You got one shot to impress everybody, show them what you got and leave it all on the floor.
