U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Europe and Africa

SIGONELLA, Italy – Lance Corporal Johnathan Neumann is an assault man with Security Cooperation Team - 1, a detachment of Marines, Sailors and Coast Guardsmen conducting a training engagement with the Senegalese Companie de Fusilier Marine Commandos, or COFUMACO in Toubacouta, Senegal, as part of Africa Partnership Station 14.

APS-14 is a maritime-security exercise with international partners and organizations along the west coast of Africa that brings partnerships into action through cooperation.

The Marines worked alongside the COFUMACO cadre, training and advising them on maritime security force assistance, marksmanship exercises, patrolling techniques and small-boat tactics and skills. The Commandos then train the rest of the Senegalese Armed Forces themselves, representing a progressive step in theater security cooperation events.
Neumann, an Evansville, Ind., native, was the primary instructor for SCT-1’s land navigation package.

“From the moment he received his tasking, he took charge and spent a tremendous amount of time preparing [for] his class,” said 1st Lt. Thomas McNamara, the officer-in-charge of SCT-1.

“On the first day of training in Toubakouta, Lance Cpl. Neumann led more than five hours of classroom instruction and practical application with the COFUMACO Cadre and students.”

His ability to take on new challenges was remarkable, and his dedication to fellow Marines and ability to train with the COFUMACO is what earned him the title of Warrior of the Week.

Entrusting Neumann with instructing a foreign military shows extreme trust and confidence in his leadership abilities and training aptitude.

“Above all, I think Lance Cpl. Neumann loves being an infantryman, and desires to be highly proficient at the skills an infantryman is required to know,” said McNamara. “When he returns from this deployment, he will be [an instructor] teaching [Marines who are fresh from the School of Infantry] the skills they need to succeed. Lance Cpl. Neumann recognizes this and is cognizant of how serious and important that [task] is.”

Warrior of the Week was created to recognize the Marines and Sailors of SP-MAGTF Africa who play a significant role in the day-to-day operations that lead to mission success. Sometimes these accomplishments go under the radar, thus we try to capture the moments so that everyone else can appreciate their value.
