YONGSAN, South Korea - Korean National Police (KNP) from Yongsan-gu Police Station visited United States Army Garrison Yongsan, Sept. 12.
Approximately 110 police officers attended the KNP Appreciation day. The event officially began with the welcome remarks given by U.S. Army Garrison Yongsan Commander Col. Maria P. Eoff at Commiskey’s Community Center.
“As Garrison commander, I want to personally thank you for joining our team and helping us protect our shared neighborhood,” Eoff said. “Being a cop is sometimes a thankless job, and I want to tell you how much we appreciate what you do.”
“You are part of the alliance and part of our team! Our law enforcement partnership is key to our strong alliance between both organizations. Together we will continue our strong, united efforts to keep our community safe. Thank you again for what you have done to keep our Yongsan community safe for our service members, families and civilians to this date.” She ended her remarks by saying ‘Kyung-Chal-Yi Saeng-Myung-Eul Gu-Han-Da’ which means ‘law enforcement saves lives’ in Korean.
Following her comments, Senior Superintendent Chief of Yongsan-gu Police Station shared his gratitude for her leadership and generosity, and said he looks forward to working with her during her term as garrison commander.
Both leaders presented certificates for outstanding members of the KNP and Yongsan law enforcement agencies.
Then the visiting KNP were briefed about ROK/US alliance for an hour and half. Afterward, they had lunch at the Honors Café, the military dining facility and toured the installation.
Interestingly, one of the KNP members, Cpl. Yeom, who works at 606 combatant police unit ran into his old high school friend, Cpl. Lee, who currently serves as a KATUSA in Yongsan Garrison while they had lunch at the DFAC. This was his second time visiting Yongsan Garrison but this was the first time being at the KNP appreciation event. He has something to say about ROK-US alliance: “Considering South Korea is in a situation where the Korean Peninsula is divided into two and the war still ongoing, ROK-US alliance is indispensable for our nation to be secure.”
“I felt we were bonding at the event because even though the purpose of this whole event was to express their appreciation to us, here I am thinking WE, as Korean National Police, feel thankful for their steadfast efforts to keep our community safe,” he added.
Also, the KNP appreciation event planned to show a popular movie called "The Purge" for them to watch at the post movie theater with popcorn and drinks so that they can fully enjoy the movie.
